The Best Way to Get a Perfect Shave

For thousands of years men have had this battle with their facial hair, and as shaving spread through the world, men with unshaven beard became known as “Barbarians” meaning the unbarbered”. But as time went on shaving became more sophisticated. In the year 1847, a man named William Henson invented the hoe-shaped razor that a lot of people have in their medicine cabinets, in the year 1895 a traveling salesman named King Camp Gillette combined the idea with a disposable double-edged blade. So yes from the beginning of time men have stood in front of the mirror to perform the daily routine of shaving, and for the people who like cleans jaw, this daily chore becomes a life essential routine.

The bane of the 5 o’clock Shadow

This beard really made its mark in the mid-80s due to the likes of George Michael and Don Johnson from Miami Vice. Back then, to the opposite sex it gives a sense of masculinity, while to others it stirs up of ticklish torture, but in reality, ask any damsel and she will tell you that it becomes a woman’s worse nightmare when it leaves their face feeling sore red after a romantic snog.

Preparation is King

There is a saying that goes like this “ anything worth doing is worth doing well,” especially when it comes to shaving. Shaving is not a process that should be rushed, or done at the last moment. If you are to have a morning shave, feel your beards prior to shaving; take the time to observe it. So you can know if your skin is feeling sensitive or dehydrated, have you been in the sun a lot? All of these factors contribute to the result of shaving, with time you will become acquainted with your beard and the way it grows. For those who like to shave in the bath, pouring warm water no the beard softens the skin and opens the pore to release its’ natural oil. What is the Best Razor to Use?

Another important area of your shaving to focus on is the type of razor you use, in other to have that perfect wet shave the kind of blade you use will make all the difference between having a sore face and a perfectly smooth one. It all boils down to our preferences, from a single-edged razor to one of the 4-5 blades that vibrate. Carter and Bond  say that “ However, the 4 or 5 bladed razors are not good for your face according to men’s grooming specialist who believes that dragging a five-bladed razor across your face has detrimental effects on your skin.” If you are a bit old fashioned like me, you will love my personal favorite the Merkur Vision Double edge (DE) you get to experience an extremely close and comfortable shave. Although it is expensive but I assure you that it is worth the investment. But whatever type of razor you intend to buy depends on you entirely but do have this tips in mind:

  • You should always keep the blade sharp and change it when the blade starts to wear, now depending on how tough your beard is a single blade could mean once a day or couple of days at most but if it is a twin blade once a week will be okay
  • When you are done with shaving, the blade should be kept clean and dry because the dirt helps the blade to wear faster and this will result in a tougher shave.
  • If using a power razor then keep it to twin blades at the maximum. A power blade safety razor will generally last longer but will need to be cleaned thoroughly after each shave.

How to get the best and closest Shave

Ever wondered why the barber performs his ritual of using a hot towel on your face before every shave? Not only those it soften the skin, it opens up your pores and weaken your hair follicles and thus preparing you for the shave. But this is like a mountainous task to do during the work week. So the next best thing to do is to do it in the shower, when you use the hot shower, the steam does its job by opening up the pores and then you use a few drops of pre-shave oil to lubricate and protect your skin, then you apply the shaving cream my favorite is Kyoku’s Sake infused shave cream, with a badger hair shaving brush which is recognized as the best because of the bristles. With your free hand, you pull your skin taut before each stroke, please note that you have to shave with the grain (for those of you who don’t know The grain of your beard just means which way the hair grows, so when we say with the grain, this means you’re shaving in the direction the hair grows. And we say against the grain, it means you’re shaving in the opposite direction the hair is growing). Aftershave rinse, rinse your face well with cold water whose work is to close the pore, leaving the skin feeling fresh. When you are done, you apply aftershave, you might want to try an alcohol-free aftershave because the alcohol-based tends to dry the skin and that will result in a dry appearance, followed by moisturizer. Do take the time to enjoy your shave, although it could sometimes feel like a tedious task, but do take the time to enjoy it so that you can get the perfect shaving experience.
